Against all odds

A single mangrove seed, against the odds, manages to take root 100 yards off the existing coastline. It avoids being eaten, washed out to sea, drowned, beached in unfavorable conditions or drying out in the sun.

Years later, as the roots begin to trap sediment around the maturing tree, more seeds find their way here. Over time, a mangrove stand is born. Appearing to have risen out of the sea itself.

(I believe my scanner is dying a slow death. The images are scanning in at 1/2 the normal resolution and clarity. Considering it's 5 years old, and has seen a LOT of action, it's no surprise. I will replace it, and these photos, when I can. Until then, grainy-crappy images it is.)
